About Hayward's Primary School...

We are a Community Primary School, situated on a busy campus. Our school, Leapfrogs Nursery, the Youth Centre and the Crediton Arts Centre all share a large site, and we benefit from maintaining strong partnerships with these other organisations.

Hayward's School has served the local community since January 1860, when it was first opened in the old buildings adjacent to the present school site. It has always been very much a part of the history and local community in the rural town of Crediton.

The school moved to its present location in 1937, and in 2003 benefited from a major rebuilding programme.

We feel that the children at Hayward's not only benefit from the superb accommodation, but are being taught by committed and motivated staff with high quality resources to support their work.

Our staff, coupled with supportive parents and governors, contribute greatly to the success of our school. We all work together with a common purpose - to ensure that our children are happy and successful in their primary years.

If you would like to visit us in person, we are always delighted to welcome visitors, and would be glad to give you a tour of our school. Please see the 'Contact Us' page for details of how to get in touch, and where to find us.

Our office is staffed from 8.45am-4pm each weekday, or you may like to leave a message on the answer machine, and our admin staff will return your call as soon as possible. Full details about our school are available in our prospectus which we would be happy to send you.

School Numbers
The school has approximately 270 children who come from Crediton or the surrounding area.

Ofsted : Overall Evaluation in 2008
This good school serves its community well. It is improving rapidly in many aspects and has a few significant features that are outstanding. Pupils are exceptionally positive about the school and enjoy it enormously. Outstanding care, guidance and support by the whole staff team contribute to the good personal development and well-being of pupils, including those who are most vulnerable and those with complex problems. There have been dramatic improvements in behaviour, which is now good. The headteacher is an outstanding leader and manager. The other leaders and governors support him effectively, providing good overall leadership and management. Together they ensure a balanced approach to pupils’ individual personal development and academic achievement. Parents recognise this. One of the relatively few who replied to the inspectors’ questionnaire wrote, ‘Since the appointment of the headteacher the school has gone from strength to strength.’ Another parent commented on the staff as follows, ‘They give their heart and soul to our children and treat them all fairly and individually.’ The progress made by pupils is good, having accelerated significantly since September 2006. Pupils’ achievement is now good. The exceptionally effective systems for checking the work of the school provide very accurate information about its performance and this is used skilfully to plan for further improvements. This has enabled the school to make good progress since the last inspection and excellent progress over the last two years. The school is exceptionally well placed to improve further.Click here to download the entire report.

March 2009

CREDITON Festival of Song, held in Exeter Great Hall was a huge success – a number of our children joined forces with a group from Landscore to perform an ABBA tribute under the theme of ‘Songs from Sweden’. Other schools performed songs from Russia, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the United Kingdom. This was followed by a fantastic performance by the outstanding ACM Gospel Choir (many of you will remember them from the BBC series “Last Choir Standing”). Thank you to all those parents who were able to support us in the Festival – and a big thank you to Mrs Dixon and Mrs Vallance who supported the practised with the children leading up to the event.
